Overheard: Why Does Dada Look Like Grandpa?

By

Overheard is our series of snippets/conversations that we have with other travelers and/or locals along the way.

"Where are you from?" is a common first question in the Philippines, and really in all of SE Asia.

"America," we said, over breakfast at a shack on Alona Beach.

"Ohhhhh," said the woman who'd asked the question. "Her daddy is from America, too."

We looked at the child next to the woman. She looked like a dirty blonde version of Dora and was trying out all 16 of her new crayons.

"Does he see her much?" I asked.

The woman thought for a bit, spitting out a piece of bone from the fish in her mouth.

"It's been over a year," she said. "Last time he was here she asked me 'why does dada look like grandpa?'"

Author's note: While we're tagging this to the Philippines, the same story is likely true throughout SE Asia.
